Alert for Filmmakers - Paradigm Shift is Happening.

Year by year, the ratio of unplanned low-budget films are getting increased and those are falling prey to someone's benefits. Almost 300 films go unsold every year or they don't even collect their production cost by selling them Overseas, Satellite, and OTT. In another five years, the present set of producers and the last three years of Assistant Directors will perish from the market. Unless they realize the paradigm shift happening in the industry, it is impossible for them to sustain or make a mark.

Every 10 years, the storytelling mechanism is getting changed. But the writers/directors who came to the industry 10-30 years ago still have stories relevant to that era. Hence, producers are creating a firewall layer between the creator and themselves. Production companies who want to make movies according to their own process, policy, and market value, have an additional scrutiny layer of script analyzers in their production house. Producers believe that the analyzers can eliminate the poorly written stories in the first layer and they can listen to those stories that can be taken to the next level.

Due to the emergence of OTT platforms, there is a sure demand for path-breaking conflicts and storylines. OTT companies have stiff competition from other content providers in the market. Slowly, production companies in Tamil Cinema have mid-aged and young producers. Hence, they aren't interested to listen to the stories that are for the previous generations.

In a year, each regional film industry produces a minimum of 500 films.  Half of it is done by filmmakers who have already done more than one film. So, new filmmakers have only a limited amount of opportunity. There are several hundreds of entry-level filmmakers in the industry. Every year, the count of aspirants is increasing in leaps and bounds. But where are the producers to accommodate all these ambitious filmmakers?

Every big production company gets a minimum of 500 scripts per year. Based on the evaluation capacity of the Production House, one out of 20-100 scripts are getting selected for the next level.

Not all the selected scripts are getting materialized. Few get dropped because of the ego issues between the writer, director, artist, and the production house. Few get dropped due to financial hiccups. One out of every 10 selected scripts goes into shooting mode.

Only two hundred films get released out of the 500 films produced in the year. The rest of the movies go unsold due to various factors like Lack of Story, Narratives, conflict, Low Quality of visuals, Poor acting skills, bad marketing strategy, and presentation, etc,. One in a hundred low-budget films become a hit due to proper screenplay structure, believable characters, conflicts, plot, and acting. Rather than concentrating on the story, screenplay, direction, and acting, low-budget producers get misguided with the success of one super hit low-budget movie as an example.

Out of 200 films, only 10% of the movies are shaking the box office. Time for filmmakers to think about what kinds of movies are getting failed. A paradigm shift is happening across the film industry.

Alert! Awake!! and Arise!!!
